Joel Powell is an accomplished conductor, music educator, and composer currently serving as the Director of Orchestras at Avon High School in Avon, Indiana. Under his leadership, the Avon orchestra program consistently performs at the highest level, capturing Indiana state championships and earning national acclaim. On the national stage, Mr. Powell has twice had his ensembles selected to perform at the prestigious Midwest Clinic Band and Orchestra Conference. A recognized leader in string pedagogy, his ensembles have been featured in The Instrumentalist, and he has twice been named the Indiana ASTA Orchestra Teacher of the Year, receiving the honor at both the middle school and high school levels.

As a composer for RWS Music Company, Mr. Powell writes directly from his daily classroom podium. His educational string literature focuses on driving energy and natural pedagogical reinforcement, crafting the kind of exciting, rewarding music that students absolutely love to play while empowering them to sound their best.

An active clinician, guest conductor, and speaker, Mr. Powell regularly leads all-state and regional honor orchestras across the United States. He is a frequent presenter at the Midwest Clinic, as well as at school districts and music education events throughout the country. He also shares instructional techniques and resources globally through his YouTube channel, Joel Powell, Conductor.

Mr. Powell holds a Master of Arts degree from Ball State University, where he also earned his magna cum laude Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Music Education and studied conducting under Kirk Trevor and Bohuslav Rattay. He previously directed orchestras at Goshen Community Schools, Carmel Middle School, and the Indianapolis Youth Orchestras.
