Music should create a sense of forward momentum. Teach your students to look ahead and always be aware of what is coming and aim for the endings of phrases to create a landing point. Forward momentum is created not by the note your on but how you move from one note to the next. It’s not about where you are, it’s about where you are going. If your students can make this shift in thinking the music will become more organic, relaxed, alive, meaningful and have a sense of direction.
