Listening and hearing are two different things. Hearing is involuntary while, listening is voluntary. A student hears the birds, the rain, their teacher talking or the tone of their instrument, but they choose wether to listen to these sounds or not. Focused hearing is listening. Remind your students of this distinction from time to time. Encourage them not just to hear, but also to listen.
